Guide

Choosing a provider for Qwen, DeepSeek, GLM or Kimi

Choose the exact model-provider endpoint, not a national-origin label or family name. Compare version, serving configuration, required features, data handling and task performance before comparing the token price.

GatewayScore’s Chinese Models collection helps discover families such as Qwen, DeepSeek, GLM and Kimi across providers. That collection describes developer origin; it does not determine where a request is processed, which company receives it or what a hosted endpoint guarantees.

What the documentation establishes

Qwen3-8B model card, DeepSeek-R1 model card and Z.ai model overview document distinct model families and variants. Hugging Face quantization overview explains that numerical representation has method-specific tradeoffs. A hosted endpoint can therefore differ in more than its display name; ask for exact serving details rather than assuming equivalence.

How to test your implementation

  1. Shortlist exact IDs in the model directory. Separate base models, reasoning variants and named distilled or fine-tuned derivatives.
  2. Request provider documentation for the selected endpoint and account configuration. Mark undisclosed precision, region or retention as unknown.
  3. Run the same language, coding, retrieval or tool-use tasks with a fixed rubric. Include your application’s actual languages and formatting requirements.
  4. Compare refusal behavior, schema validity, long-input handling and concurrent latency. Preserve provider usage and actual route identity.
  5. Approve a fallback only after it passes the same feature and data policy. A cheaper route with unknown retention is not an equivalent substitute.

Worked example

Hypothetical comparison: endpoint A charges less per input token, but its tested task needs two repair attempts; endpoint B finishes in one accepted attempt. Calculate all input and output charges, repair calls and platform fees for each completed task. If the endpoints use different quantization or model variants, report that difference instead of attributing all quality differences to the hosting provider.

When to proceed—and when to stop

Choose the lowest-cost endpoint that meets your acceptance criteria and disclosure requirements. Keep developer origin as one factual attribute, not a proxy for safety, quality or residence. A route hosted outside China still needs its own data-handling review; a model trained by a Chinese developer is not inherently restricted to Chinese-language use. The guide makes no universal ranking of families.

Evidence scope and maintenance

Source review: October 6, 2026. This is a documentation-led engineering guide, not a hands-on certification of every gateway. Provider examples establish only the behavior described in the cited API documentation. Worksheets and test procedures are GatewayScore editorial recommendations; numerical examples are hypothetical unless explicitly attributed. Recheck model cards and host disclosures when a new version, distilled variant or serving configuration appears.

Continue with Catalog interpretation, Data handling evidence. Use the model directory to inspect provider-listed options, then verify the exact endpoint and account terms.

Common questions

Does a Chinese model send my data to China?

Developer origin alone does not answer that. The selected host, endpoint region, telemetry and subprocessors determine the relevant data path.

Are two endpoints with the same model name interchangeable?

Not necessarily. Versions, quantization, feature support, limits and serving configuration can differ.
